The University of Michigan is a public research university located in Ann Arbor, Michigan. The Catholepistemiad, or University of Michigania, was founded in 1817 in Detroit, 20 years before the territory became a state. It is Michigan's oldest university. In 1837, the school was relocated to Ann Arbor on 40 acres of land that is now known as Central Campus. Since its inception in Ann Arbor, the flagship university campus has grown to include more than 584 major buildings spread across Central and North Campus, a combined area of more than 780 acres, two satellite campuses in Flint and Dearborn (each separately accredited), and a Center in Detroit.

It has a total undergraduate enrollment of 31,329 students (fall 2020), a city setting, and a campus size of 3,207 acres. The academic calendar is divided into three trimesters.
